I find it very tacky and intrusive when people take pictures of their food in a restaurant setting. Of course the restaurant staff would not say that they mind... you'd obviously be asking just for the record...
Also be mindful that your dinner company may not share your passion for intellectualizing food. If your goal is to review the restaurant then don't make it a social occasion with friends and use it as material for your blog. And don't ask them beforehand either!
